Monday evening and we are settled back in to the house, with the fire glowing with harvested pine cones and the log supplier, Mario's, pension fund.
A full report of the town's shops to come in the next days as I catalogue all the fruit & veg, meat, cheese and bread shops. We can't believe the choice we have in such a small town.
Yesterday was sunny so we set off along the coast in the firm belief that some bar and restaurant would be open on a fine sunny Sunday. The coastline to the W is dotted with tourist sites, all low profile and many for campers and caravanners. In 30 miles, nothing. Until the entrance to the Varano Lagoon (Lago di Varano) and there we saw cars parked and lights on.
I had cavatelli pasta with shrimps and mussels and Suellen had a cheese risotto. The cavatelli pasta is very firm and is shaped like a long haricot bean and worked very well with the seafood.
The lagoon is about 60 square miles (150 sq kilometres), has an entrance at each end and makes a great harbour for many boats, large and small. Below, a small one coming in to its berth.
Today opened with sunshine so we took this shot into the harbour from our balcony.
Today we decided that we couldn't rely on restaurants so we took a picnic into the woods.
You can see the log sack in the LHS of the boot. Picnic stuff and cool bag on the shelf above.
The forests are full of animals roaming free. Goats, pigs, sheep and even cows. They have massive bells around their necks, are oblivious to cars, until you stop to get out and take their picture, then they turn and walk away.
This area of Puglia is the main locations for Italy's best olive oil and away from the woods almost everything is laid to olive groves. How do they harvest ? - put nets on the ground and then shake and collect every few days. You can see the green netting below.
Finally a wine comparison. As we leave our house and leave the historical part of the town, as we enter the main square is a posh wine shop. Prices from 10 euros upwards. We looked but didn't buy.
So we walked 300 yards down the street to buy in bulk at 1.80 euros a litre.
Hic and goodnight until tomorrow.
